Explosion at Scaled Composites

You may or may not know that I'm a bit of a space enthusiast. I was at the Mojave Airport for the first rocket flight of SpaceShipOne in December 2003 when it became the first privately developed aircraft to break the sound-barrier. I was also there when it first and second times it went into space back in June 2004.

I'm surprised that I didn't hear about this until today, but there was an explosion at Scaled Composites, creators of SpaceShipOne, last week during a test related to the development of SpaceShipTwo that killed 3 and injured 3 more. You can read more about this in the LA Times.

I've spent a bit of time at the Mojave Airport. It's hard to imagine an explosion of this magnitude there.

Comic-Con 2007

I went. I was under-whelmed.

Comic-Con gets more and more crowded every year. Even going on the 1st day in the middle of the week isn't enough to escape the swarms of fan-boys & girls. It's a giant buying frenzy with few announcements to be made.

I didn't really see anything cool that was new. Some of the booths had the same old stuff from last year. All the panels I wanted to see, which were few, were packed to capacity hours before they started.

I didn't even buy anything really. I got 2 Peanuts t-shirts and an issue of Mouse Guard: Winter 1152 #1 which I in turn got signed by writer/artist David Petersen. I also asked him to sign the Mouse Guard: Fall 1152 hardcover that I own, which he did along with a quick little sketch next to the sig.

Coolest thing unveiled at this year's con: the Sweeny Todd poster... which I saw on Ain't It Cool News, not at the con itself. With the internet, there's really no point in the Con anymore.

I doubt I'll go next year unless I have to for work.
